If this trailer for Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of Macbeth is any indication, we’re not looking at our average Shakespeare movie. The upcoming film starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard as Lord and Lady Macbeth looks incredibly intense and visually stunning — definitely something you want to put on your must-see list.

Kurzel, who previously directed the gritty Australian true crime film The Snowtown Murders, employs some truly striking imagery in Macbeth. The idea that this is just a fraction of the film is kind of awesome — if Kurzel can sustain this visual and tonal style throughout, Macbeth could easily wind up on a few top 10 lists at the end of the year.

For those unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s classic play, Macbeth centers on the titular Lord Macbeth, who is told by a trio of witches that he will become King of Scotland. Macbeth’s obsession and ambition, encouraged by his wife, drive him to violence in order to take what he believes is rightfully his.

From the Academy Award® winning producers of The King’s Speech and acclaimed director Justin Kurzel, comes a visceral and visually breath-taking retelling of the classic tale about an ambitious Scottish lord who seizes the throne with the help of his wife. Starring Academy Award® nominee Michael Fassbender and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard, MACBETH is an epic cinematic experience.

Macbeth also stars David Thewlis, Elizabeth Debicki, Jack Reynor, Sean Harris and Paddy Considine and hits theaters in the UK on October 7. There is no US release date currently set, but with The Weinstein Company distributing stateside, it’s safe to assume we'll get this one in time for awards season.
