Margot Robbie to Star as Harley Quinn in DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie
Things got interesting with the upcoming 'Suicide Squad' movie when it was revealed that Jesse Eisenberg would be returning after 'Batman vs. Superman' to star as Lex Luthor. Then, things got really interesting when it was revealed that Jared Leto was in talks to star as The Joker, introducing Batman's greatest nemesis in the new era of 'Justice League' films. What was once thought to be a ragtag group of B-side villains is now shaping up to be a roster full of DC's evil A-list villains. And, now you can even more iconic villain to the lineup. What would any Joker appearance in 'Suicide Squad' be without Harley Quinn, who will be played by 'Wolf of Wall Street' star Margot Robbie.
Robbie's name has been attached to 'Suicide Squad' for the past month or so, and the actress even dropped out of the 'Ghost in the Shell' reboot to concentrate on this film. Confirmation comes from Collider who also note that Will Smith and Tom Hardy are close to signing on for their roles too.
Quinn is an interesting comic book character because, well, she's not a comic book character. Despite being a fan favorite, Quinn was actually introduced on September 11, 1992 in an episode of 'Batman: The Animated Series' as an accomplice to The Joker. She proved so popular that DC eventually ported her over to the comics with her first appearance in Batman #570 with the "No Man's Land" story. While the character in the animated series was more humorous, the comics version was far more violent. Despite some above-average gymnastics ability, Harley Quinn has no superpowers (though, she would later become friends with Poison Ivy, who would inject her with a serum that would give her some superhuman abilities).
The original 'Suicide Squad' movie lineup was reported to be Blockbuster, Multiplex, Mindblogger, Jaculi, Captain Boomerang (aka Harkness), Vixen and Deadshot, but with three major actors cast in none of those roles, we're wondering how valid those rumors are. (We also can't imagine Will Smith signing on to star in a superhero movie to play Captain Boomerang.)
Robbie's deal (as well as Leto's, should he definitely sign on) includes multiples films and sequels, so you can expect them to show up in additional future films (likely the first solo 'Batman' movie). The actress recently wrapped the 'Tarzan' reboot with Alexander Skarsgard and 'Focus' with Will Smith.
David Ayer ('Fury') is directing 'Suicide Squad' with a early 2015 start date planned.
'Suicide Squad' opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.
