Think of it as retaliation for G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is developing a new G.I. Joe movie. with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec working on the script. Here’s the key detail they provide...

One of the characters in the currently untitled project is said to be Chuckles, who has not appeared in the previous Joe movies. While he is not the center of the film, the project is in deep development and things could change. Chuckles is a character from the 1980s line of action figures who first debuted in 1987 and in the beloved Marvel Comics that same year in issue #60. The character is known for his undercover and infiltration work.

Chuckles! This Chuckles-intensive project would be in addition to the long-rumored Snake Eyes spinoff based on the most famous G.I. Joe character (who never speaks, seemingly making things tricky for a full solo movie, but what do I know).

If this movie happens, it would be the third stab at a live-action G.I. Joe movie. The first came out in 2009, was subtitled The Rise of Cobra, and was a kind of origin story for the property, with Channing Tatum playing Duke. The second film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, came out in 2013 and basically was a soft reboot; Tatum’s Duke was killed off within the first couple scenes along with most of the non-Snake Eyes cast, and replaced with new heroes, including Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock. Neither movie was a blockbuster, or particularly popular with fans, and even Retaliation’s addition of Johnson (and Bruce Willis in a small role) didn’t help it at the box office; it wound up making less money in U.S. theaters than the first Joe.

Presumably this new film with Chuckles et. al, will use the lessons learned on those first two films and apply them to a new story. After all those earlier mistakes, now the filmmakers should know better. And knowing is half the battle!
