Nicole Kidman in Talks for Karyn Kusama’s L.A. Crime Thriller ‘Destroyer’
Looks like Nicole Kidman wants to continue her winning streak of working with female directors. After starring in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled remake and joining the upcoming season of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake, Kidman is considering taking a role in Karyn Kusama’s crime thriller Destroyer.
Destroyer hasn’t been officially announced, as Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body) has been set to direct Breed, based on the novel by Chase Novak. But the Tracking Board reports that if a deal with Kidman is made, Breed might be put on the backburner in favor of getting the ball rolling on Destroyer this fall. We don’t know much about the plot, but Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, whom Kusama also worked with on The Invitation and Aeon Flux, wrote the script and will be producing with her.
While speaking with The Guardian back in March, Kusama described Destroyer as a kind of “personal epic – a beautiful character study of an incredible female that we haven’t seen in this genre before.” Kusama is all about character studies of weird, interesting, terrifying women— Jennifer’s Body is about a high school girl possessed by a demon who only wants to kill boys, and her contribution to female-run horror anthology XX channeled Rosemary’s Baby. Kidman is well-versed at being weird and scary, yet mesmerizing, so I definitely hope this deal pans out. These two sound like the director-actor dream team you never knew you wanted.
