The Lonely Island’s upcoming music mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping won’t start never stopping until June 3, but Universal has already released a green-band trailer for the eyeballs too innocent for last week’s red-band delight. The newly released spot covers most of the same territory as the previously released trailer, introducing the intricate network of assistants in the orbit of pop sensation Conner4Real (Andy Samberg) and the star-studded roster of performers who will portray them. Already-seen highlights include Bill Hader as a questionably sober roadie, Will Arnett as a coffee-chugging paparazzo, and Sarah Silverman as an acerbic PR agent, but this green-band trailer also introduces Maya Rudolph as a corporate sponsor, and Joan Cusack as Conner4Real’s proud mama. Fellow Lonely Island founders Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone step in as the house lyricist and DJ, respectively.

Not much changes from the red- to green-band trailers, apart from the boobs that we no longer get to see and the cuss words we no longer hear. The Deadmau5-head joke attached to Taccone’s introduction from the red-band trailer has been replaced with a “McCartney and Kanye” gag that I can only assume was written before the two actually collaborated. But the three months separating the present from Popstar’s release shall be long ones spent in want of what looks like a wonderfully funny, absurd comedy. With early reports from South by Southwest also celebrating Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s work-in-progress cut of Keanuit’s shaping up to be a strong summer for film vehicles for successful TV comedy teams.
