Listen to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Sick Cover of the ‘Halloween’ Theme
When the 13th falls on a Friday in October, it makes the season extra spooky. To celebrate the occasion, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released a cover of John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween theme. The duo behind scores for films like The Social Network and Gone Girl took a crack at recreating Michael Myers’ eerie theme song, and my dudes, the results totally shred — but like, in a creepy-cool way.
Reznor and Ross released the track on YouTube with some rad accompanying artwork by Chris Bilheimer (whose work you might also recognize from issues of Birth.Movies.Death. magazine). In an interview with Rolling Stone, Reznor explained the influence Carpenter’s horror film — and his iconic composition — had on his fragile young mind:
I clearly remember my friends and I at 13 years old conning our parents into letting us see Halloween when it came out in 1978. We left the theater forever changed. We were damaged and scarred, with the shit genuinely scared out of us and that theme stuck firmly in our heads. John Carpenter, it’s your fault that I turned out the way I did.
The master of horror offered his official endorsement of the cover: “Moody and dark, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ version of ‘Halloween’ does amazing justice to the original,” Carpenter said, “I’m impressed.”
Carpenter is returning the franchise he created, recently confirming that he’ll compose music for Blumhouse’s Halloween reboot / sequel, which hits theaters next year and features the return of another series icon: Jamie Lee Curtis. David Gordon Green is directing the new Halloween from a script by Danny McBride (yes, that one).
In addition to YouTube, Reznor and Ross’ cover is available to purchase on Amazon and iTunes — for all your spooky Halloween party needs. Or if you just like to chill to horror movie jams.
