‘Spectre’ Theme Song Announced, Sam Smith Confirmed For James Bond’s Latest
The identity of the performer chosen to sing the new James Bond theme song is almost always as exciting as the buildup to the release of the film itself — even British bookies have placed odds on which pop star would sing the theme for Spectre, with Sam Smith coming in as the heavy favorite. Smith has previously denied his involvement and feigned obliviousness, but it looks like the singer / songwriter has recorded the new Bond theme after all.
UPDATE: Sony Pictures confirmed that Sam Smith was singing the Spectre theme song, which is titled “Writing’s on the Wall” and will be available for purchase/streaming on September 25. Said Smith in a statement: “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”
People seem to think I’m doing it but I have no idea what’s going on. I’m being deadly serious. I think I would know by now. I heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it, it’s definitely not me.
But it looks like ol’ Sam Smith was pulling our legs because according to HitFix, not only is the new Bond theme song dropping tomorrow, but Smith himself tweeted this image seemingly confirming his involvement:
Yes, that is the Spectre logo on his ring. Smith follows in the footsteps of Adele, who performed the eponymous theme song for Skyfall, and Jack White and Alicia Keys, who performed the theme for Quantum of Solace. Smith’s musical stylings have often been compared to Adele, so he’s a fitting successor for the franchise.
With the theme song dropping tomorrow, Sony is likely preparing to up their marketing push for Spectre, which hits theaters on November 6.
