The ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Trailer Introduces Spider-Gwen
A few weeks ago, I got to see a preview of some footage from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I wasn’t allowed to write about it at the time, but you can see some of what I saw in this terrific trailer that’s now available. And the feeling I got from the footage is the feeling you can get here: Namely that Into the Spider-Verse has the potential to be the most interesting (and most comic book-y) comic-book movie in a very long time.
The movie, which was spearheaded by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, is about Miles Morales, the “ultimate” Spider-Man of the comics. (Don’t ask; the tl;dr version is he’s a different kid who gets spider-powers after the death of Peter Parker in an alternate universe.) That alone makes it interesting, but what really sells it is the dynamic and unusual visual style that the film has, with flying thought bubbles and visual sound effects. It’s like Ang Lee’s Hulk, but presumably (hopefully) a lot less ponderous and a lot more fun.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in theaters this Christmas.
