They didn’t have anyone get on a stage in front of a room full of eager nerds to do it, but Universal just announced the official release date for their Steve Jobs biopic ‘Steve Jobs.’ The film will open in theaters on October 9, 2015. Start your 2016 Oscar prognosticating now!

Universal’s ‘Steve Jobs,’ the second Jobs biopic in recent years, is based on a script by Aaron Sorkin and follows Jobs through three different product launches from the tech genius’ career. After initial development at Sony under director David Fincher (with possible star Christian Bale), the film found a home at Universal, where Danny Boyle is now directing Michael Fassbender as Jobs and Seth Rogen as fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

The film also stars Katherine Waterston from ‘Inherent Vice’ and Michael Stuhlbarg from ‘A Serious Man.’ The release date would seem to suggest Universal’s confidence in the project and their belief that it could be a major player in this fall’s awards season (Boyle’s had luck in that regard before, particularly with 2008’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’). If it’s good, it certainly sounds like a showcase for Fassbender. And if it’s not, they can always rerelease it the next year with better sound and an HD screen as ‘Steve Jobs 2.’
