Back to the Future

As any movie fan worth their salt will undoubtedly recall, Back to the Future Part II imagined a timeline in which we had hoverboards, automatic lace-up sneakers, futuristic Pepsi (more on that here), and…Jaws 19. Robert Zemeckis’ time-traveling sequel was almost eerily prescient in its imagining of the future of blockbuster franchises, and now there’s an official trailer for Jaws 19 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the best film franchises in history.

Later this month, on October 21, 2015 to be exact, marks the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to in the future in Back to the Future II. 2015 also marks the 30th anniversary of the original Back to the Future film opening in theaters. As you might expect, Back to the Future fever has hit a fever pitch and there will be lots of ways fans can commemorate the occasion, including buying yourself a “Pepsi Perfect” in a limited edition futuristic bottle, just like the one Marty buys in the future.

Back in Time does something a lot of movie documentaries don’t, combining both interviews with cast and crew and actual fans to give you a more dimensional look at the incredibly beloved and enduring classic. In the trailer for the new Back to the Future documentary, you’ll see regular fans alongside people like Steven Spielberg and Michael J. Fox discussing everything from fun behind the scenes stories to what the film means to them.

Themed entertainment is a like a shark or a relationship – it has to keep moving forward or it has to die. Today, September 8, 2015, marks the day that Universal officially leaves its past behind. Disaster!: A Major Motion Picture Ride Starring You, is closing to make way for a Fast and Furious themed ride. It’s closure marks the definitive end of the park’s original intentions, for better and for worse.

For several years now, Steven Spielberg’s production company DreamWorks has partnered with Disney to distribute their films, while Spielberg has been free to produce and direct films with and for other studios. But a major change is brewing, as DreamWorks is cutting free from Disney next year with the studio eyeing a leap over to Universal. This seems like a basic corporate maneuver, but with that change could come something that either excites or terrifies you: reboots of properties like Jaws and Back to the Future.

In addition to returning to theaters and releasing a premium Blu-ray box set this fall, Back to the Future will also celebrate its 30th anniversary with a pretty big celebration. Today comes news of some exciting plans to help fans further celebrate the release of one of the best films of all time — there’s just one catch: it’s all taking place in Los Angeles.

Just yesterday we told you about the amazing Back to the Future trilogy box set hitting shelves later this year to commemorate the original film’s 30th anniversary. But now there’s an added gift for fans of the franchise: Universal is bringing the entire trilogy back to theaters this fall. Where we’re going, we don’t need roads — just comfy theater seats.

Everyone knows that 2015 is the year that Marty McFly and Doc Brown journey to in Back to the Future Part II. While we may not have hoverboards or Jaws 19, we are getting a new 30th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release of the Back to the Future trilogy, which isn’t a bad consolation prize. In fact, the slightly more obsessive fans have even more reason to celebrate, as the Back to the Future animated series from the early ‘90s is coming to DVD for the first time.

IDW is going where they don't need roads. In a press release that is apparently from the future, the publisher announced Wednesday it'll be publishing a new Back to the Future anthology comic starting in October. Subtitled Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines, the series will follow alternate versions of events from the movies, fill in the gaps between them, and offer up prequel stories. (Maybe we'll see Doc Brown's college years!)
