Pixar may get most of the headlines, but fans of slightly more off-beat animation have always loved the movies released by Laika Studios. With a list of movies that includes Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls, Laika has a string of critical hits that focus on the supernatural and magic experience of growing up. And while Kubo and the Two Strings brings their movies to unprecedented heights — our own review called it the best Laika movie yet  —  a new interview with director and Laika CEO Travis Knight made it clear we shouldn’t expect to see any sequels anytime soon.

This summer hasn’t been a great one for movies (we even have actual data to back that up), and even if the rest of this month turns out to be as disappointing as June, we still have August to look forward to — and Kubo and the Two Strings, Laika’s latest stop-motion animation adventure, which looks like the studio’s most epic and visually stunning project yet. Even though the previous trailer was said to be the last we’d see before the film’s release, Laika has delivered one more sneak peek to tide you over until August.

We’ve been looking forward to Laika’s upcoming fantasy adventure Kubo and the Two Strings since the first trailer surfaced back in December. The fledgling studio has accrued a ’00s-Pixar-level spotless track record in the past seven years; their releases Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls dazzled critics and audiences alike with their blend of ceaselessly clever humor and stop-motion wizardry. There’s no reason to believe Kubo won’t continue this hot streak for Laika, and the latest trailer to appear online cements this as one of the year’s most exciting animated releases. (Though the potential for crossover appeal in the world of furries is not quite as great as that of Zootopia. Point, Disney.)

Laika has given us some of the most beautiful animated films in recent memory, including 2014's hit ‘The Boxtrolls.’ Today the studio has announced its next animated endeavor, ‘Kubo and the Two Strings.’ The Japanese-inspired film was written by the guys behind ‘ParaNorman,’ and will feature a fantastic voice cast—including Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, and Ralph Fiennes.

There’s a particular scene in ‘The Boxtrolls’ that truly exemplifies the bravado of Laika – an almost “I don’t give a f---” attitude toward focus groups and the societal norms of what an animated films should be. The problem is, this scene can’t be described in its full detail because it would be considered a spoiler. Let’s just say that, instead of redemption – a theme we see quite often in animated films – a character explodes. He literally explodes off this mortal coil with no chance of any kind of redemption ever again … or breathing, for that matter.

Although CG is the bread and butter of the animation world, there's no denying the appeal of stop-motion, which is so much cooler and tactile than pixels. For this reason, any new project from Laika, the studio behind 'Coraline' and 'ParaNorman,' is instantly on our radar and their upcoming 'The Boxtrolls' is no different.' Although the film is still over a year away, the first teaser has arrived,

This is one of the best years in recent memory for animation nuts. We've gotten a new Pixar movie, we're getting a new Walt Disney Animation movie, and we've got four stop-motion animation films for 2012 (bonus points if you can name the other three). Now you can see some new TV for two upcoming animation movies -- 'ParaNorman' and 'Wreck-It Ralph.'
