Mr. Robot

The 2016 Emmy Awards have already given some much deserved accolades and a few head-scratchers, but at least a few saw this one coming. After many years under the radar, Rami Malek has finally hacked his way into taking home the statue for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama.

Wednesday night was apparently the hot one for TV parodies, as the same evening that saw Jimmy Fallon reuniting the cast of Stranger Things also saw Stephen Colbert hooding up for a Late Show parody of Mr. Robot. Still, we’ve got to ask the real questions – are we all just ones and zeroes in a game of Ms. Pac Man? How many Christian Slaters are there, really?

There’s no un-ringing the conspiracy theory bell, and Mr. Robot may be learning that the hard way. After a breakout year with just enough twists to keep voracious Redditors humming, Season 2 has struggled to generate the same mystery, and indeed saw its biggest twist uncovered as early as the premiere. Now. showrunner Sam Esmail chimes in, admitting “we didn’t really hide it that well.”

The world behind USA’s Mr. Robot has gotten just nutty enough that we wouldn’t be surprised by some elaborate video game twist, but the series has done us one better. Telltale enables cans to enter the world of Mr. Robot for themselves, with a new game app keeping in contact with the show’s characters.

USA’s Mr. Robot doesn’t yet have the same universal acclaim in Season 2 as before, but nonetheless remains dedicated to finishing Elliot’s fractured vision. USA confirms Mr. Robot will return for Season 3 in 2017, assuming fsociety doesn’t knock out all our TVs by then.

You’d probably have trouble explaining Mr. Robot to a friend without at least one use of the word “weird,” and last night’s Season 2 midpoint “eps2.4_m4ster-s1ave.aes” may have upped that quotient considerably. As if a sitcom dream sequence featuring ALF and a Full House-type theme song weren’t enough, Mr. Robot actually had their respective creators perform the bits.

The fine folk at Honest Trailers rarely get into the TV game (even less often double-dipping), but suffice to say, certain series might take years to make the rotation. No longer, as all the major Emmy 2016 contenders, from The Americans to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt get their own mini trailer parodies!

Lest you have enough trouble distinguishing the reality of USA’s Mr. Robot, one of the series’ most important mythologies has a real-world counterpart. Following this week’s revelatory hour (or so), watch the full Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie that inspired fsociety for yourself!

That time of year is upon us again, as this coming Thursday, July 14 sees the announcement of the 2016 Emmy Awards nominations, in a field that seems tougher by each year. Favorites like Game of Thrones hit new levels of spectacle this year, while newcomers like UnREAL and Mr. Robot could split the nominations wide open.
