Training Day

The film and TV communities are still reeling from the sudden loss of actor Bill Paxton, especially in light of the Terminator star’s still-active career. Most immediately, Paxton could be seen leading CBS’ Training Day adaptation, of which producers now clarify the late actor’s filming status, and offer comment on his passing.

CBS didn’t show us anything new by the official 2017 Star Trek teaser, but will the same be true of its other new franchises Training Day, or MacGyver? Judge for yourself, as the latest movie-TV reboots get official trailers fro the 2016-17 season, looking far different than anything you remember.

Now that one of CBS’ most visible 2016 decisions is out of the way, the eye network sets its gaze on the new crop of pickups, and what they might replace. Officially ordered to series now are a Training Day sequel with Bill Paxton as the lead, and a thrice-baked MacGyver reboot, among others.

CBS’ adaptation of Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day made clear early on that it would reverse the racial dynamic between its two leads, but there is an obscure bingo winner out there who had Bill Paxton replacing Denzel Washington. That’s right, the guy from Big Love is your new corrupt cop, and King Kong … well, probably has a thing or two on him.

Most successful movie to TV adaptations have some foot in the original creative pool, and CBS’ upcoming Training Day series followed the trend with director Antoine Fuqua, and possibly Ethan Hawke. Sadly, Fuqua has relinquished his role as director of the pilot outing, while negotiations with Hawke fell through, but why? Is Training Day already in trouble?

Crowded TV landscape as it is, no one was terribly surprised to hear Training Day had been added to the list of TV’s many movie properties, albeit with the benefit of director Antoine Fuqua aboard. Now, we’ve learned Ethan Hawke may have in mind to reprise his role from the 2001 film as well, though the level of involvement may change in development.

Oh you, reign of TV reboots, long may you ride. Following the likes of Limitless and Rush Hour, CBS has officially elected to move forward with a new take on Antoine Fuqua’s iconic Training Day, shaking up the casting and confirming Fuqua himself to helm the pilot.
