Final trailers are typically the most revelatory and tend to show a little too much, whether it’s the action or the humor or the goriest shots and jump scares. But Sony’s final trailer for The Shallows takes a very different and more effective approach, teasing out just enough from the Blake Lively vs. a Shark thriller to keep us seriously invested in whatever the hell happens to her next. Clearly, she’s going to outwit this shark. This trailer makes us want to see how she does it.

The latest — and last — trailer for Jaume Collet-Serra’s new thriller is vaguely unnerving, set to the haunting soundtrack of what sounds like an excerpt from a vintage motivational recording circa the late ’50s. While a man espouses the virtues of self-sufficiency, we watch a, uh, lively Blake Lively frolic into the ocean and ride some waves before inevitably finding herself stranded on a rock with a shark the only thing standing (or swimming) between her and the safety of the shore.

This final trailer feels more like a first teaser, teasing scenes — and the shark itself — in short, pulsating glimpses. In a time when trailers have become Cliff’s Notes versions of the films they’re overselling, this one for The Shallows is downright refreshing. Also refreshing? As much as I enjoy Collet-Serra’s series of “Hardened Liam Neeson Fights Bad Guys While Wearing a Cool Leather Jacket” movies, it’s good to see something different from the director who also brought us Orphan, the underrated horror gem from 2009.

In the taut thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.

The Shallows hits theaters on June 29.
