‘Titanic’ Is Returning to Theaters For Its 20th Anniversary In a Fancy New Format
No less of an authority than ScreenCrush.com called it one of the most romantic movies of the last 25 years. It also made 458 gabillion dollars (estimated) and remains one of the 1990s most enduring cultural touchstones. If you’ve ever stood on a boat and screamed “I’m the king of the world!” or rammed a cruise ship into an iceberg, you have James Cameron’s Titanic to thank. You’re welcome.
Hard as it is to believe, Titanic turns 20 years old this year. (YOU ARE SO OLD. YOU ARE SO VERY OLD.) And to mark the occasion and make you consider your mortality in a deep and upsetting way, Titanic is returning to theaters for a special one-week engagement in what’s called “Dolby Vision.” Cameron described it in a press release as “beyond 3D, beyond 70mm, it’s beyond anything you’ve seen before. The image leaps off the screen as bright and vibrant as life itself. This is the way all movies should be seen and without a doubt,Titanic has NEVER looked better.” I mean, that does sound pretty good.
You’ll be able to see the movie at any AMC Theatres location that has a “Dolby Cinema at AMC” auditorium. (20 of the locations around the country also support 3D, so you’ll be able to see it that way in a few select spots.) These screens, Dolby boasts, possess “state-of-the-art optics and image processing, delivers high dynamic range with enhanced color technology and a contrast ratio that far exceeds that of any other image technology on the market today. Dolby Cinema also includes the award-winning Dolby sound technology Dolby Atmos, which moves audio around the cinema, even overhead, placing the audience deeper inside the film’s setting.” Also the seats “pulsate” in time to the movie. I have always felt rumblings when Celine Dion sings “My Heart Will Go On,” but this time they will be real and not imagined!
Tickets for Titanic are on sale now at this website; every one comes with a free digital download of the movie. At that point, you don’t even need to leave your house to watch it!
