‘Warcraft’ TV Spot Rallies for Battle With New Footage
Director Duncan Jones dedicated a long time to Warcraft, the upcoming film based on the wildly popular MMORPG. Whether he successfully adapted the long-running PC game into a worthwhile movie remains to be seen, and following last week’s reveal of the first official teaser trailer comes some additional footage via an international TV spot which highlights the film’s interesting species and epic landscapes in short bursts.
There’s not much to hold onto in the latest spot for Warcraft, which uses some quick editing to arrange footage from the upcoming action-fantasy film in a way that doesn’t offer any real sense of narrative. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Jones’ commitment to the project paid off — the CGI looks smooth, but the majority of footage is made up entirely of CGI, so it looks less like a movie and more like a video game.
It’ll be interesting to see how (or if) Universal appeals to a broader audience with this one. The gamers will certainly turn out for it, but what about those who are unfamiliar with the concept? Will Warcraft be able to draw them in based on its superficial similarities to The Lord of the Rings?
Warcraft does boast a solid cast, though, including Toby Kebbell as Horde leader Durotan and Travis Fimmel as Alliance leader Anduin Lothar. Here’s the official synopsis:
The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.
Co-starring Dominic Cooper, Ben Foster, Rob Kazinsky, Paula Patton and Clancy Brown, Warcraft arrives in theaters on June 10, 2016.
