Oh boy. Hostiles looks like the kind of movie where you walk out of the theater and immediately cancel your plans for the rest of the day because there’s no way in hell you can interact with society after seeing something that heavy. That’s definitely the impression we’re getting from the first trailer for the latest film from Scott Cooper. The director of Black Mass and Out of the Furnace reunites with Christian Bale (who starred in the latter) for the new western, which recently impressed critics at Telluride.

Bale headlines the period drama as an Army captain tasked with escorting a dying Cheyenne war chief and his kin back to their tribe’s native land — a journey complicated by the presence of a suicidal, grieving widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was killed by members of the Comanche tribe. Bale and Pike are big draws on their own, as is the promise of Cooper returning to form (and potentially surpassing previous efforts), but the supporting cast is also filled with attractive talent: Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster, Wes Studi, Timothee Chalamet (who is having quite a year), Q’orianka Kilcher, Adam Beach, Rory Cochrane, Stephen Lang, Bill Camp, Peter Mullan and the late, great Michael Parks.

Hostiles does not yet have distribution, but with all those positive reviews out of Telluride, it probably won’t be long before a smart studio snatches this one up and plops it down right in the middle of awards season.
