The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ will see a major expansion of the new Spider-Man movie universe, what with Mary Jane Watson, Electro, Harry Osborn and many more familiar faces joining the film. But here’s another big change: Spider-Man’s costume.

In a recent Twitter chat to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ director Marc Webb was asked about costume changes for the upcoming sequel. Here’s what Webb had to say:

The “bigger eyes” will immediately make Spider-Man fans think of the late-80s/early-90s Todd McFarlane era of the “Amazing Spider-Man” comic run. For better or worse, McFarlane reinvented Spider-Man during his run and gave a new era of comic fans the definition of what Spider-Man should look like. Up until now, the movie version hewed closer to the original Steve Ditko design but now Webb looks to modernize the character.

The “gnarly web shooters” also could hint to a McFarlanization of the character as the webbing drastically changed under the artist’s run. Where it was previously a simple string, McFarlane described his revamped web design as “spaghetti webbing” and was thicker and more rope-like.

How the costume change will be weaved into the story remains to be unseen. What do you think about the new look for Spider-Man? Do you think it can work?
