Trophy Talk: ‘Foxcatcher’ and ‘A Most Violent Year’
Let’s talk some trophies! Today, Mike Ryan and the Huffington Post’s Chris Rosen discuss the Oscar chances of both ‘Foxcatcher’ and ‘A Most Violent Year.’
‘Dumb and Dumber To': A Movie Made For 1994
The target audience for ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ is college-age kids from 1994. Now, by that, I don’t mean “people living in 2014 who went to college in the mid-‘90s.” I mean that it’s for someone who is in college right now and it’s also 1994. I’ve never seen a movie like ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ that is so unabashedly not from this time. It’s one of the best period pieces I’ve ever seen, even though the plot of the film is set in the present. The Farrelly brothers have successfully made a movie from 1994 in 2014.
This Movie Actually Exists: ‘Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd’
Shia LaBeouf is in ‘Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.’ He plays a high school student named Lewis who wears a horse costume. This is the most remarkable about the 2003 prequel to 1994’s ‘Dumb and Dumber’ -- a prequel that the directors of the original film, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, had nothing to do with and actively despise.
The Bourne Interstellarcy
Warning, there are 'Interstellar' spoilers ahead.
15 Moments That Made Us Unintentionally LOL During This Week’s ‘Gotham’ Episode, “The Mask”
Monday night’s ‘Gotham,’ titled ‘The Mask,’ was about a business tycoon who makes his job applicants fight to the death in an abandoned office building, with the winner being hired. Like most episodes of ‘Gotham,’ it was pretty entertaining, but also unintentionally hilarious. Here are the 15 times I laughed out loud while watching ‘Gotham.’
Remembering the Lost Action Hero of the 80s: Dabney Coleman
The chances of you remembering the movie ‘Cloak & Dagger’ increase significantly if you were born between 1972 and 1976. On the surface, this seems like an oversimplified statement, simply because a lot of movies are like this. I’m sure there are others, but I was born in between 1972 and 1976, so this is a movie that is very much in my own personal zeitgeist, yet it's also one that gets the most amount of blank stares when referenced in front of other people who do not fit this age criteria. (Followed closely by ‘Max Dugan Returns.’)
Let’s Talk About Dr. Mann in ‘Interstellar’
First of all, if you haven’t seen ‘Interstellar,’ well, this is your one and only warning that major spoilers lie ahead. We good? Let’s continue.
About three-fourths of the way through ‘Interstellar' -- a movie I mostly think is pretty good -- we finally meet a character that we’ve been hearing about for the entire movie, Dr. Mann.
Trophy Talk: Is There an ‘Interstellar’ Smear Campaign?
People love watching famous people accept trophies. So, every so often, The Huffington Post’s Chris Rosen and ScreenCrush’s Mike Ryan will speculate about these trophies and which famous person might win one. It will be fun. Let’s talk some trophies! Today, we discuss smear campaigns against movies and the recent New York Times piece about Christopher Nolan and Jessica Chastain.
Someone Guessed the New ‘Star Wars’ Title, ‘The Force Awakens,’ Back in 2012
On Thursday, Lucasfilm announced the highly anticipated title to its highly anticipated new 'Star Wars' movie, now known as 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' Once a new untitled 'Star Wars' movie is announced, it becomes kind of a fun Internet guessing game speculating what its title might be. Since the announcement that there would be an Episode VII back in October of 2012, there have been a lot of message board guesses. Today, using a Google search for the term "The Force Awakens," but omitting anything that came today, the earliest reference to this title came way back on Dec 21, 2012, when a user at the Star Wars fan site The Force.net named "Queen Gimmedala" guessed "The Force Awakens." Even more remarkable, this wasn't a list of like 100 guesses, nope, it's there all by itself.
Director James Marsh Explains Why He’ll Never Watch ‘The Theory of Everything’ Again
There’s a special sensibility that James Marsh brings as the director of ‘The Theory of Everything,’ which, I suspect, has a lot to do with his success as a documentary filmmaker. Marsh won an Oscar for directing ‘Man on Wire’ – a documentary detailing Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the two World Trade Center towers – and now he’s back on everyone’s awards radar with his Stephen Hawking biopic, ‘The Theory of Everything.’
