‘Batman vs Superman’ Details Reveal Batman’s Dilemma, Zack Snyder Teases Brainiac
We’re still a bit far out from the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but with the film making an appearance at Comic-Con next week (where we’ll undoubtedly see some new footage), new details about the superhero showdown flick are trickling out. These plot details primarily deal with Ben Affleck’s brooding Batman and his moral dilemma regarding Superman.
In EW’s special Comic-Con issue (via Comic Book), we learn some details about a few scenes in particular. First, a scene in the “derelict husk” known as Wayne Manor, which is described as “almost comically grim”:
Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and his loyal butler, Alred (Jeremy Irons), are gravely intoning their lines into a burned-out fireplace, as Bruce prepares for his Valley of Elah moment with Superman. The billionaire vigilante appears weary but determined, not unlike the actor portraying him.
EW also got a chance to see footage of that rooftop battle, teased at last year’s Comic-Con:
In his editing suite in Pasadena last month, Snyder showed off early passes of the money sequence, a rainy rooftop battle between the two capes. There’s an undeniable thrill to watching these pop culture icons go at it–throwing each other through walls and skylights.
And finally, Batman ponders his sociopolitical and moral dilemma in facing Superman:
Snyder also reveals a scene in the Batcave where Bruce Wayne outlines his motivations to a skeptical Alfred, a bit of realpolitik reasoning that weighs the morality of a preemptive strike on Superman against even the minimal chance of humanity’s destruction.
Via Comic Book Movie, Snyder revealed that he had considered using either cyborg villain Metallo in a Man of Steel sequel or Superman super-villain Brainiac in Batman v Superman, but after Man of Steel utilized an alien villain, he reconsidered. Snyder says “Brainiac was definitely down the road,” with EW confirming that Chris Terrio’s (Argo) script for Justice League Part One is already complete. Terrio previously re-wrote David Goyer’s draft of Batman v Superman.
Earlier rumors suggested that Brainiac would appear in the Justice League movie(s), and Snyder’s talk of the villain definitely lends credence to those rumors.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
