After a disappointing weekend that saw it lose to a horrible Melissa McCarthy comedy in only its third week of release, Batman vs. Superman looks poised for a total domestic run between $325 and $340 million. That’s below Deadpool, Furious 7 and even American Sniper and certainly not what Warner Bros. had hoped for their big (and expensive) movie. Current projections indicate that Batman vs. Superman won’t turn a profit when all is said and done. Hoping to inch closer to profitability, Warner Bros. is reportedly mulling the idea of releasing Zack Snyder’s extended, R-rated cut of Batman vs. Superman directly to theaters.

The 3-hour long version was expected to make its debut on DVD and Blu-ray this summer in the Batman vs. Superman Ultimate Edition, but putting the film back in theaters during the summer season could help goose the numbers to a more respectable level. Warner Bros. has yet to confirm the news, first reported on the Heroic Insider podcast.

Snyder has previously said that Jena Malone’s character, rumored to be Barbara Gordon and deleted from the theatrical version, would appear in the R-rated cut along with other cameos like, randomly, Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green. Snyder added, “there’s just a lot of these Easter Eggs in the Director’s Cut that I think are gonna be fun for everyone.” Plus, you can expect more on the origins of Doomsday, more violence and likely that scene of Superman searching Metropolis for Martha Kent that Snyder said was too dark for the final cut.

The question will be: if they release it, will they come? It would be doubly embarrassing for the studio to release this big, long version of Batman vs. Superman in theaters and no one shows up to see it. Right now, the film is trending poorly at the box office, meaning the bad word of mouth is finally catching up to the film after a strong opening. It might be a safer play to just call it a day and let audiences who really liked the film catch up with the Ultimate Edition at home and focus their theatrical efforts on Suicide Squad.
