DVD and Blu-ray

Comic-Con 2015 taught us that we needn’t say goodbye to The Legend of Korra (or the Avatar-verse) forever, following announcements of a sequel graphic novel, but fans of Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino’s animated epic have even more reason to celebrate. Not only will Korra get a full Blu-ray and DVD release, but so too have we the first key art.

As the summer movie season comes to an end, you may find yourself bemoaning the lack of major blockbusters hitting theaters. No worries — we’ve got a lot of great titles hitting DVD and Blu-ray this month, including Mad Max: Fury Road, which is pretty much the only movie you need to buy to get you through the rest of your existence. Inside Out is easily one of Pixar’s best, most emotionally complex films to date, making it an instant animated classic. As such, we — like you, surely — are incredibly excited for the Blu-ray release. The other day, we learned that Pixar has attached a new short titled Riley’s First Date? to the home video release, and new details have emerged that should get you even more pumped for the Blu-ray.

It should come as no surprise that fancy new limited editions of the original six Star Wars movies are hitting Blu-ray later this year. Did you think Disney and Lucasfilm weren’t going to do everything in their power to wring every last penny out of this devoted fan base? After all, everything about Star Wars: The Force Awakens has us weak in the knees. We have never been more vulnerable to large corporations exploiting our love. And now we know what love looks like: a series of very cool steelbook Blu-rays, complete with new art.

Hello, movie fan. Have you started assembling a holiday wish list for the year 2015? Well, you can start right now because a Blu-ray box set assembling the collected works of legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki is on the way and you’re definitely going to want this one. In addition to every feature film he has directed, the set will also include various special features as well as Miyazaki’s early television work.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this fall and while the full list of special features hasn’t been revealed, the first look at what will be included on the disc has been revealed. More importantly, we also know what the disc will not include: a director’s cut and a new One-Shot short film.

If you’re a huge MCU fan or you have one in your life, and you’re looking for holiday gift ideas, then Marvel’s got you covered. The studio is releasing a huge, special edition Blu-ray set containing every film from Phase Two, from Iron Man 3 to Ant-Man. Even better: the set comes with a special mystery Blu-ray disc. Hmm. What could it be?

Everyone knows that 2015 is the year that Marty McFly and Doc Brown journey to in Back to the Future Part II. While we may not have hoverboards or Jaws 19, we are getting a new 30th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release of the Back to the Future trilogy, which isn’t a bad consolation prize. In fact, the slightly more obsessive fans have even more reason to celebrate, as the Back to the Future animated series from the early ‘90s is coming to DVD for the first time.

Back in April, Amazon sent an e-mail to customers claiming that Avengers: Age of Ultron was available for pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray and would include an “extended edition”. The online retailer quickly retracted that statement saying that nothing had been officially confirmed by Disney and/or Marvel. Now, director Joss Whedon has had his say on the upcoming Avengers 2 DVD and can confirm that there will be no extended or director’s cut of the film, mostly because he’s “super f---king lazy”.
