After taking a brief break from horror to direct Furious 7, James Wan returns to his genre home base for The Conjuring 2, the follow-up to his hit 2013 poltergeist thriller. The latest trailer for the sequel is packed with lots of new footage, as Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga travel across the pond to investigate a terrifying case known as “England’s Amityville” — a haunting so dangerous that one of them may not make it out alive.

Wilson and Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, characters based on the real-life paranormal investigators. Like The Conjuring, the sequel is also taken straight from the Warrens’ own files, with the latest ghastly outing inspired by the Enfield Poltergeist case, in which a single mother and her four children — one daughter in particular — are tormented by malicious, murderous entities. The real-life case was the subject of intense scrutiny, with many researchers claiming the children had perpetrated a hoax — a belief substantiated by one of the kids in an interview, where she claimed there was no haunting.

Years later, the children maintain that while they engineered a small fraction of the haunting, the vast majority of paranormal activity was genuine.

Directed by Wan and co-written with Chad and Carey Hayes and David Leslie Johnson, The Conjuring 2 also stars Madison Wolfe, Frances O’Connor, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Simon McBurney and Franka Potente. The film hits theaters on June 10.
