The business of adapting bestselling young-adult books into movies can result in untold riches (see 'The Hunger Games' and 'Harry Potter') or it can result in something instantly and completely forgettable (does anyone remember 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones'?). The upcoming adaptation of Veronica Roth's novel is certainly hoping for the former, and unlike so much of the competition, the new 'Divergent' trailer makes it look like the film may have the pedigree to pull it off.

Directed by Neil Burger ('The Illusionist,' 'Limitless'), this dystopian adventure stars the wonderful up-and-comer Shailene Woodley, but she's backed up by a deep ensemble that includes Kate Winslet, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ashley Judd, Ray Stevenson and Maggie Q. The trailer and the film's dark future setting are certainly going to invite immediate comparisons to the 'Hunger Games' movies, but, hey, there are far worse things to be compared to. If 'Divergent' can capture a fraction of that franchise's audience, we'll surely see the rest of Roth's books hit the big screen -- the second book, 'Insurgent,' is already in development as a film.

Here's the official synopsis:

'Divergent' is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a future where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.

'Divergent' arrives in theaters on March 21, 2014. What do you think, book fans? Does this film look like it does justice to the series?
