‘Doctor Strange’ Details Reveal Who Rachel McAdams Is Playing, Kind Of

At this point, we know who pretty much all the main players are in Doctor Strange, save for a few minor details — although Mads Mikkelsen’s casting was finally confirmed today, all Marvel will let on is that he’s playing the main villain, and the studio is being similarly coy about Rachel McAdams’ role. While many have speculated that the actress is playing Night Nurse, new details on her part in Doctor Strange suggest that’s not entirely accurate, or perhaps not even accurate at all.

EW debuted a huge Doctor Strange cover story today, and details are still trickling out online about Marvel’s mystical superhero film. In addition to getting our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch in character as the Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel confirmed Mikkelsen’s casting — though they refuse to reveal who he’s playing aside from the “main villain.”

In a separate article, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige offered a few details about McAdams’ role, and though it doesn’t really sound like Night Nurse, it could be an update on the character or a combination of a couple of different characters from the comics:

Rachel McAdams plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into he role of a sorcerer. She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity.

Executive producer Stephen Broussard added:

Rachel McAdams is sort of [Doctor Strange’s] contemporary in the modern-day New York world, before and after he goes on this crazy journey. So, she sees him before, she sees him after. She’s kind of this audience point of view.

Maybe not Night Nurse, but Night Doctor? That could be interesting. As for whether McAdams is playing love interest to the titular Doctor, Cumberbatch himself was rather dodgy:

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say what the interest is. But if I hit on her more than the Ancient One, put it like that.

Whatever that means. We’re sure to hear more about the film in the coming days, as EW’s special issues often yield loads of new details. In addition to McAdams and Mikkelsen, we’re still not sure who Transparent star Amy Landecker and martial arts actor Scott Adkins are playing in the film, though the latter would suggest we’ll get some pretty awesome fight sequences.
