Falling Skies’ Season 2 arrived on Earth this past Sunday with two all-new episodes that kicked off at 9:00 p.m. on TNT, and we’re about ready to bareknuckle box a Skitter with anticipation! Nearly a year now we’ve been waiting to catch up with the 2nd Massachusetts to learn what’s happened since Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) blasted off in a Skitter spaceship to save his son Ben (Connor Jessup), leaving the rest of the resistance to fend for themselves.

We know our reasons to watch ‘Falling Skies’ season 2, but what about you? In case you didn’t catch the first spectacularly sci-fi season of this Steven Spielberg-produced alien invasion drama, we’ve got everything you need to know going in, and what you’ll definitely want to catch when the Skitters invade our TV screens a second time this summer!

Where’s Tom Mason Been All This Time?

Obviously, the biggest cliffhanger left to be resolved is what happened to Tom, after the season 1 finale “Eight Minutes” saw the good professor Mason actually boarding a Skitter (or Overlord) craft in search of answers about his son! Three months will have passed between then and now, so expect the flashbacks to slowly unfold, as we learn the truth of his return. Might he be harboring some alien infestation of his own?

The Battles Are Bigger, Badder, Better

The first few minutes alone are streets ahead of any of the battles we’ve previously seen on ‘Falling Skies!’ With a bigger budget, and new directors and show-runners behind the cameras, the action quotient only has higher to go as the 2nd Mass wages all-out war on their alien invaders. ‘The Walking Dead’ is great, but the zombies don’t shoot back with lasers and nukes!

The Apocalypse Never Looked So Good

An apocalypse just wouldn’t be an apocalypse without some bad-ass and beautiful survivors, and we’re looking very much forward to seeing Moon Bloodgood, Sarah Sanguin Carter and Seychelle Gabriel back in action. It’s not all bodacious biker babes, of course, as the ladies can get their fill of dreamy men and post-apocalyptic romance as well.

What Happened to the Rest of the World?

It’s insane to think that the invasion of ‘Falling Skies’ wiped out a full 90% of the human population, but even the group we’ve seen from the 2nd Massachusetts still represents a relatively small amount of people. With the increased budget and scope this year, don’t you want to know what happened to the rest of the world outside the Northeast? Even without the Skitters, these folk are definitely not alone out there.

Less Annoying Kids to Watch Out For

One of the weaker points of the first season of ‘Falling Skies’ was the heavy focus on the children of the resistance, which certainly gave a lot of emotional grounding to the series, but ultimately detracted from what we most wanted to see. Now, we’ve got Rick gone, Ben kicking Skitter ass and taking names, and even young Matt has a weapon of his own! Who’s to say he’ll use it very often, but yay for no more helpless children! And no Carl!

    Because John Pope Is Awesome

As if our interview wasn’t enough to prove it, Colin Cunningham’s John Pope is an absolute breakout character of the first season, with his take-no-prisoners attitude and charming roguery. Now, guess who’s got his very own squad of fighters, “The Berserkers,” ready to ride out and take on the Skitters in all the ways the 2nd Mass can't?

If you want to preview everything you’ll see from John Pope in season 2, be sure to read our interview with Colin!

New Faces, Men of Science and Men of Faith

Not only will ‘The Killing’s' Brandon Jay MacLaren join the cast of ‘Falling Skies’ season 2 as a new love interest for Lourdes (Seychelle Gabrielle), but toward the end of the second season fans of ‘LOST’ will find a very familiar face: John Locke himself, Terry O’Quinn! O’Quinn will appear in the final two episodes of the season as a former mentor of Tom Mason who might be harboring a few secrets of his own. Over-under odds on him turning into a Smoke monster? Anybody?

    Going Deeper into the Skitters

Bigger battles and scope isn’t the only thing to expect from ‘Falling Skies’ season 2, as we’ll get to explore the mythology and biology of the mysterious aliens that much more. Not only will we learn about the “Overlords” introduced last season, but also the nature of Skitters themselves, and what other creatures/races they might have in their employ. Not to mention, in the season finale, we’ll learn the aliens’ true name! Got any guesses what that means?

Season 2 Definitely Grew a Pair

Everything about the coming season of ‘Falling Skies’ will be darker, and more hardcore. No longer are the survivors safe in an abandoned school, but out on the road, and facing increased threats from every turn. There will be death, destruction, devastation, and even snow! We realize that’s not necessarily hardcore, but it’s always pretty to look at. The gloves are coming off this season, folks.

So the Skies Will Keep Falling

So we can get a third season, of course! ‘Falling Skies’ season 1 had relatively middle-of-the-road ratings but decent critical reception, enough so that TNT granted them a second season with an increased budget and faith. The more people tune in Sunday nights to check out the second season of ‘Falling Skies,’ the more certain we can be of getting a third! And trust us, from what we’ve seen of this season, you’re definitely going to want more.
