‘Fantastic Four’ Won’t Be Based on One Comic, Says Kate Mara [UPDATE]

Fantastic Four Reboot Plot Comic Books

There’s no question, ‘Fantastic Four‘ fans are worried about 20th Century Fox’s upcoming reboot from ‘Chronicle’ director Josh Trank. Everything from the casting of the four leads to the revamped take on the story has fans wondering whether we’ll be getting a faithful adaptation or another blunder. To shed even more light on the project, and possibly even more concern, ‘Fantastic Four’ star Kate Mara revealed that the film’s plot won’t be based on any pre-existing comic book arc.

Where films like ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ took story cues from various comic books, apparently the new ‘Fantastic Four’ will have none of that. When Kate Mara was preparing for her new role as The Invisible Woman, she was initially going to read her first comic book ever, until Trank told her it was not required.

Speaking with Esquire Latinoamerica (via Screen Rant), Mara said:

I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it’s very exciting to be part of a movie like this.

UPDATE: EW reached out for further clarification on Mara’s comments to the publication, and the actress’ rep said she was misquoted. ‘Fantastic Four’ won’t be based on any singular comic, but rather a mixture of material taken from the entire canon.

Previous reports suggested ‘Fantastic Four’ would be based in part on the Ultimate series, though now this all seems moot. All we know for sure is that screenwriter-producer Simon Kinberg linked the film to ‘Chronicle’ in tone, while the plot will be a coming-of-age origin story set before these super-powered characters “really know what a superhero is.” Aside from Mara’s casting as Invisible Woman, ‘Fantastic Four’ sees Michael B. Jordan as Human Torch, Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell as The Thing, Toby Kebbell as Dr. Doom, Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder (aka Mole Man), and Reg E. Carter as Sue and Johnny Storm’s dad.

Rumor has it that the principal cast members will be making their way to San Diego Comic-Con this year, and if so, they’ll have to face the fans, even the ones on edge about the reboot. However, Mara is not sweating bullets. “I don’t feel more responsibility with this role that I’ve felt with others,” she said. “I understand that there are many fans of ‘Fantastic Four’ and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that. We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I’m focusing on making [Sue Storm] as real as possible.”

‘Fantastic Four’ will hit theaters June 19, 2015.
