Is Guy Ritchie still one of our most interesting Hollywood filmmakers? After beginning his career with indie standouts Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Ritchie has settled into a kind of forgettable jumble of big budget movies that hold their own both with critics and at the box office. I would certainly describe the Sherlock Holmes movies and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. as solid, but ‘solid’ isn’t the type of praise we typically issue to one of our best directors. And King Arthur: Legend of the Sword seems ready to continue this streak. The Arthurian legend with GoPros? Solid. Not great, but solid.

Regardless, the King Arthur media blitz pushes ahead, with the above brand new teaser (via Heroic Hollywood) and the first poster below:

Charlie Hunnam has been given the Matt Damon treatment, a picture of the actor’s face with a provocative tagline (‘He Can Save Us All,’ ‘Bring Him Home’) splashed across the image. Both the poster and the teaser speak to the earthy and gritty tone of the film, and it’s all just a little too familiar. At least The Man From U.N.C.L.E. represented a different style for the director, a kind of breezy take on sixties spy thrillers. This looks like more of the same.

Still, with a cast featuring a half-dozen of our favorite Game of Thrones actors, it’s not like we’re not going to see it when it hits theaters. It’s possible for King Arthur to be a fun movie and still raise questions about Ritchie’s skills as a filmmaker. Fingers crossed that the latest attempt to revive the Arthurian legend is full of surprises and not just the first part in another misguided cinematic universe.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword:

When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern, Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

In addition to Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, King Arthur will star Annabelle Wallis, Aiden Gillen, Eric Bana, Djimon Hounsou, and Michael McElhatton. The film will hit theaters on May 12, 2017.
