Watch How 'Game of Thrones' Season 2 Achieved Its Breathtaking Special EffectsKevin Fitzpatrick |
A few years ago, 'Game of Thrones' might not have seemed like a sustainable enterprise for HBO given its somewhat effects-heavy nature. Much more than simple swords and shields, to realize the world envisioned in George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels would take a great deal of breathtaking, yet often subtle effects depicting vast landscapes and intricately detailed locales. With its recent Creative Arts Emmy win, how would you like to see how they do it?
FX company Pixomondo is riding high this week after nabbing themselves a Creative Arts Emmy for visual effects, thanks to its groundbreaking work on the second season of HBO's acclaimed fantasy series 'Game of Thrones.' In addition to crafting exotic and intricate locales often featured solely in the background, Pixomondo also earned its Emmy seamlessly integrating fantasy creatures like Daenerys' dragons or the behemoth direwolves into scenes.
The below video gives fans an intricate look into the process of creating said visuals, including the season's most effects heavy sequences of penultimate episode "Blackwater." It's amazing to behold how much of any given sequence within the season was added digitally, from such small starting points.
