Original Awesome Mix Vol. 1 From 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was such a fun and original film with director James Gunn’s fingerprints all over it, and one of the best, most exciting films of the year. That’s due in part to the wise music choices featured on the soundtrack and Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s mixtape. Gunn previously released “Awesome Mix Vol. 0,” which featured the music he played for the cast on set, and now the director is back with another mixtape: the original version of “Awesome Mix Vol. 1.”

Gunn delivered the track-listing on his Facebook page, and while it features many of the songs from the original “Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” it also features some songs that didn’t make it into the film. We’ve bolded the songs that weren’t featured in the film below:

As you can see, the songs that didn’t make the cut would have fit in beautifully with the rest of the soundtrack. As for why they were cut, Gunn explains:

Some of these songs were in the first cut of the movie – the mean blue guard danced through the prison listening to Magic on Quill’s headphones, and Livin Thing featured in a montage in the Milano after the gang left the prison. We shot Quill singing ‘Never Been to Spain’ at the Nova guards in an aggressive manner when he was having his mug shot taken, but the winding-up-the-finger gag worked better, so it never made the cut. The rest were never really in, but I thought this would give you a good idea of the complete Awesome Mix to which young Peter Quill might have lived his life.

You may have noticed that certain songs are not listed above, and Gunn has a reason for that, too:

As you can see, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and I Want You Back are not on this list as they were technically a part of Awesome Mix Volume 2. I didn’t want Chris to be familiar with those songs.

That brings the total of Awesome Mixes to four: there’s Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, both featured in the film, Vol. 0, and finally, the original version of Vol. 1. Still keeping up? Good.
