The moment Alaska governor Sarah Palin first came to the world stage as John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential elections, we knew that her larger-than-life personality would become the stuff of parody and portrayal from years to come. Once we finished laughing at Tina Fey‘s dead-on impression, the tone turned serious as HBO’s ‘Game Change‘ garnered multiple Emmys with Julianne Moore in the lead role.

Now, the original ‘Game Change’ writers have begun work on a sequel covering the 2012 elections between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, titled ‘Double Down: Game Change 2012,’ and guess what HBO wants to do with it?

Given the ratings and award-winning success of HBO’s TV movie ‘Game Change,’ based on the Mark Halperin and John Heileman book of the same name, it isn’t surprising that the pay-cable network would be interested in a sequel. But how does one craft a sequel to a real-life account of the 2008 election? By jumping on the announced ‘Game Change’ sequel novel with another HBO adaptation!

Via The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that Penguin Press has announced authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann as writing ‘Double Down: Game Change 2012,’ a sequel to the original novel focusing on the 2012 campaign between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. So too has HBO already locked down the rights to film an adaptation of the novel, likely shortened to ‘Double Down.’

Though nothing official has been locked down, it’s believed that HBO’s ‘Game Change’ team of director Jay Roach and Emmy-winning writer Danny Strong would return for the sequel. President Barack Obama was presented in HBO’s adaptation through real-world footage, but would likely be given an actor’s portrayal in a sequel.
