HBO’s The Night Of may not have the commercial success of initially one-off series like True Detective, but the network would be foolish to ignore the megawatt critical praise. The former James Gandolfini project will have a specific end, but producers now reveal their consideration of a second season, likely an anthology with a new subject.

Speaking at the TCA press tour (via The Hollywood Reporter), executive producer, writer and director Steven Zaillian said The Night Of was always envisioned as a stand-alone series, following the first iteration of UK counterpart Criminal Justice (which itself ran a second season with a different subject). Still, the right idea might push them into a second run:

We’re thinking about it and if we come up with something we all feel is worthy of doing, we’ll do it. This was designed as a standalone piece … That being said, there are ways of certainly kind of taking what it feels like and what its about and doing another season on another subject.

The eight-episode John Turturro series features among its cast Riz Ahmed, Bill Camp, The Wire star Michael K. Williams, Glenne Headly, Ben Shenkman, Sopranos alum Max Casella, Amara Karan, Sofia Black-D’Elia, Paul Sparks, Afton Williamson, Paulo Costanzo, Ned Eisenberg, Mohammad Bakri, Nabil Elouahabi, Ashley Thomas, Glenn Fleshler, Chip Zien, Payman Maadi and Poorna Jagannathan.

Adapted from an award-winning 2008 BBC series, the Americanized Criminal Justice was to feature Gandolfini as Jack Stone, a “downtrodden jailhouse attorney who frequents police stations for clients.” In his search, the character encounters Naz, an American-born Pakistani with no memory of his accused crime of stabbing to death a young woman he met.
