Given the state of 'How I Met Your Mother''s ninth and final season, news that a potential spinoff, fittingly titled 'How I Met Your Dad,' drew mixed reactions across the board. And while opinions remain divided on a gender-inverted take on the long-running CBS comedy, its leading lady is more than up to the task. 'Frances Ha' star Greta Gerwig has officially been cast to spin her tale as the leading lady of 'How I Met Your Dad'!

News of Gerwig's casting broke curiously late Tuesday night, along with a surprising revelation that Gerwig will act as producer to 'How I Met Your Dad' along with series creators Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Emily Spivey. For those new to the spinoff, Gerwig will play the central role of Sally, who like Ted Mosby before her, slowly lays out how she met her partner in flashback.

Casting calls describe the role of Sally thusly:

A female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A break-up is inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give ‘good’ advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decide what’s best for her.

However fitting a choice, your average TV viewer might not recognize Gerwig, who remains best known for more indie fare like the Golden Globe-nominated 'Frances Ha,' 'Lola Versus' or Ben Stiller's 'Greenberg,' among others. Meanwhile, 'How I Met Your Dad' continues to cast for its new MacLaren's gang, including the roles of Sally's energetic party-girl BFF Juliet, older gay brother Danny, his husband Todd, and Juliet's coworker Frank, who harbors a one-sided crush on Sally (reverse Robin!). Of course, we'll also need a new narrator, unless Bob Saget has been working on a higher pitch.

Also worth noting is that where first it was thought that we'd meet at least some of the new cast in the final episodes of 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'How I Met Your Dad' will in fact film its own pilot independent of any of the established characters.

Well, what say you? Greta Gerwig makes a more-than-fine start for 'How I Met Your Dad,' but who would you want to see join the cast to match the likes of Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, Josh Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris? Tell us what you want to see from the 'How I Met Your Mother' spinoff, and what you think of our new leading lady in the comments!
