Just when you thought the ninth and final season of 'How I Met Your Mother' couldn't drag out the inevitable any longer, here comes the spinoff! CBS has entered talks with 'HIMYM' creators Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and 'Up All Night' creator-executive producer Emily Spivey for an offshoot series of the MacLaren's gang titled 'How I Met Your Father,' but what about the series actually seems like it could work for the franchise?

Rather than utilize the "'How I Met Your Mother' from the mother's perspective" approach that we'd heard Bays and Thomas discuss in previous mentions of a spinoff, Deadline reports that 'How I Met Your Father' would focus on an all-new gang with a female lead looking for her future husband. In keeping with franchise familiarity however, the new gang would likely hang out at the same MacLaren's pub, potentially encountering the original cast now and again, though not with any degree of regularity.

Even better, it seems as if the 'How I Met Your Father' characters could well appear in the 2014 'How I Met Your Mother' series finale next May, introducing the new gang in time for their own fall 2014 premiere without skipping a beat in CBS' powerhouse Monday lineup.

It remains to be seen if 'How I Met Your Father' will move forward with Bays, Thomas and Spivey's blank-slate approach to the series, but we're actually on board with the idea of a brand-new gang with a different story to tell. After all, it'd be at least nine years before we had to endure a sluggish final season, right? Maybe we'll all be dead by then! Fingers crossed!

What say you? Are you interested in seeing a 'How I Met Your Mother' spinoff with all new characters? How would you like to see the story of 'How I Met Your Father' told?
