Hugh Jackman Sounds Like He's Done Playing Wolverine

Hugh Jackman has been playing the clawed, mutant superhero Wolverine since the first 'X-Men' movie back in 2000; a run that has spanned six films. Like all things that last longer than a decade, it's starting to get a little old for Jackman. Although we can still look forward to his take on the iconic superhero in 'The Wolverine' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past,' it sounds like Jackman's days as an X-Man are coming to a close.

Speaking with EW on the subject of additional outings as Wolverine, Jackman said

I wasn’t even sure after the first [stand-alone] film if I would do another. I won’t say never, because I’m still loving it. But there would have to be a pretty compelling reason.

Naturally, 'The Wolverine' producer Hutch Parker added that the thought of replacing Jackman “feels somewhat blasphemous," but you can't blame Jackman if he was getting a little bored with the role. You would be too after six films.

Of course, there's always the chance that Fox will give Jackman a check with a lot of zeroes on it and he'll gladly return for ten more 'X-Men' movies. There's also the chance that any public hesitation on Jackman's part is just some very public negotiating on a new contract.

However, if Jackman really is done and a new Wolverine has to be found for future films, it will literally be the end of an era. Jackman was the first star of the first major superhero movie, paving the the way for Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. Seeing someone else with those adamantium claws would be surreal.

'The Wolverine' opens on July 26, 2013 and 'X-Men Days of Future Past' arrives on July 18, 2014.
