There's been lots of talk lately of 'Iron Man 3' being the last of the Iron Man movies. And that may very well be a (sad) possibility. But that doesn't mean it's the end of the Iron Man universe. While promoting 'Iron Man 3,' star Don Cheadle talked about the very real chance that we'll see a spinoff War Machine movie in the future. Cheadle even has some very definite ideas on what 'War Machine' would be all about.

Cheadle confirmed to Empire Magazine that he is contractually obligated to multiple Marvel movies after 'Iron Man 3' so a 'War Machine' movie definitely lives in the world of "Things That Could Actually Happen." He also confirms that they have "talked about" a War Machine spinoff and, from the sounds of things, they've talked about it in great detail.

Here Cheadle explains his ideas for the plot of a 'War Machine' movie:

It might be when he goes rogue, so to speak, and takes a mission that he believes he is morally responsible for but is against policy and does it anyway. What happens when he’s out there and he’s been dishonourably discharged but he still has the suit, or Tony makes him another suit? And now he’s out there on his own too, but even worse than Tony, because now he’s a fugitive. Because if we wanted to do it, I think the best way to do it would be go darker, to take it and make it even more visceral. Sort of close to the first 'Iron Man,' how it began. Really visceral and really realistic.

You know, we didn't know what to think about a 'War Machine' spinoff but as Cheadle describes it, we could totally get into the idea of Rhodey being a fugitive and on the run from the U.S. government. Instead of setting the film up as just another 'Iron Man' movie and fighting another supervillain, make it something like a 'Mission: Impossible' / 'The Fugitive' style movie where our hero is set up and forced to go on the lam...while in a giant metal superhero suit.

We have to wonder if Cheadle will at least also make an appearance in 'The Avengers 2' but that might be too much for one movie (especially now with the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' being added to the mix).

What do you think? Should Marvel make a series of 'War Machine' movies? Should they make an 'Iron Man 4' or end the franchise now? Give us your thoughts in the comments and listen to the full podcast below to hear more from Don Cheadle:
