One of the big rumors at Comic-Con is that Marvel's big announcement would be the casting of 'Doctor Strange'. Even Benedict Cumberbatch got in on the buzz, dropping hints during the DreamWorks Animation panel. But, if the 'Doctor Strange' casting was Marvel's big secret, the secret may have just been revealed. The Wrap is reporting that Marvel is in discussions with three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix to star as their new superhero.

According to their sources, Phoenix is Marvel's top choice for the role and the two sides have had talks about the part. They were quick to caution that no deal is in place, but it's possible that an agreement has been reached in principle; at least enough to get Phoenix to his first Comic-Con to surprise the Marvel fans.

It's not the first time Marvel has flirted with the idea of casting Phoenix. The actor was reportedly Marvel's first choice to star as Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers,' but he turned down the role (which eventually went to Mark Ruffalo). (Side note: Phoenix was also Warner Bros.' first choice to star as Lex Luthor in 'Batman v Superman', another part he eventually passed on.)

'Doctor Strange' will be directed by Scott Derrickson and is widely rumored for Marvel's previously announced July 8, 2016 release date.
