News just broke that writer and director Joss Whedon has officially signed on to direct the 'Avengers' sequel for Disney and Marvel Studios. Nerds rejoice!

Slashfilm has the scoop on a Disney conference call that just confirmed that Joss Whedon, director of this year's ultimate superhero film 'The Avengers' is most definitely returning to direct the sequel. The studio has not yet announced a tentative release date, but with 'Iron Man 3' and 'Thor 2' releasing next year and 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' scheduled for 2014, it's quite possible we could see an 'Avengers' sequel as early as 2014.

But that's not all. It seems that Whedon will also be involved in the ABC television series that will also take place in the Marvel universe. No word yet on whether his duties will involve writing and directing or if he'll just be overseeing the project in a producer capacity.

'The Avengers' collected superheroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) together for an incredibly bad-ass showdown against mischievous Loki as he planned to take over Earth. It was one of the largest and most ambitious superhero films to hit the big screen, proving to be wildly -- and obviously -- successful. But who will the team face next?
