‘The Mummy’ Reboot Wants Its ‘Mama’; Andres Muschietti Eyed to Direct

The Mummy Reboot
Universal

Following the success of Universal’s horror movie ‘Mama,’ the studio made its desire to expand the story into a sequel known. Too bad its director, Andres Muschietti, did not want to travel down that rabbit hole, and now he’s eyeing his next gig, directing the upcoming reboot of ‘The Mummy.’

According to THR, Muschietti is eyeing a deal to helm the upcoming reboot, following Len Wiseman’s exit from the position. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing with Sean Daniels. ‘The Mummy’ found its audience with the 1931 original and the Brendan Frasier-led series, which kicked off in the late ’90s.

Though not many plot details are known, the script, written by Jon Spaihts (‘Prometheus’), sets the story in the modern age. When Wiseman was still on board, he stated that the film is “more of a modern day version of what would happen if we came across a mummy in our world today” and described it as a horror movie, which makes this perfect for the guy who directed one of the most successful horror movies of recent memory.

We’ve been awaiting Muschietti’s follow-up to ‘Mama,’ especially after we caught up with him and asked about any interest in helming a potential ‘Mama 2,’ to which he replied, “We sort of wore out the subject matter.” We’re excited to see what he’ll bring to the table for the new ‘Mummy’ adventures.
