NBC’s ‘Mockingbird Lane’ Could Have Been Way Scarier

As anyone who ever watched ‘Pushing Daisies’ well knows, Bryan Fuller is the man to go to when you want distinctive visuals on a TV budget.  For that, and other reasons, we regret that Fuller’s ‘Munsters’ reboot ‘Mockingbird Lane‘ never managed to make it off the ground apart from its pilot airing as a Halloween special, however successful it may have been.  So while NBC obviously didn’t share Fuller’s vision of ‘Mockingbird Lane,’ would you believe it could have been far darker and more disturbing?  Check out the original concept photos for the re-booted series inside!

We appreciate the subtlety that went into NBC’s Bryan Fuller-helmed ‘Munsters’ reboot ‘Mockingbird Lane,’ toning down more outlandish aspects like Jerry O’Connell’s Frankenstein monster-esque Herman Munster with a much more human appearance, but did you know the series might have gone in a very different direction?

According to the original concept art for the series by Canadian designer John Gallagher, some of which we’ve even seen before, ‘Mockingbird Lane’s take on its core group of monsters originally appeared much more grotesque.  In addition to more imposing versions of Eddie Izzard’s Grampa Munster, and an undeniably vicious Eddie Munster, it seems Herman’s original design more closely resembled a full-on Frankenstein’s monster, complete with rotting flesh!  Try making that work on a serialized broadcast drama!

You can check out the photos below, and tell us if you would have liked to have seen a more grotesque ‘Mockingbird Lane’ make it to series in the comments!
