Back in January, director Neill Blomkamp shared some pretty wild and impressive concept art for an unmade Alien movie. When asked about it in February, the director said that Fox was interested in the film, but it was basically up to him to make it. And now it seems like he’s definitely made up his mind, as Blomkamp has officially announced the new Alien project as his next movie.

Blomkamp made the announcement on his Instagram account along with some concept art, adding, “Um... So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien.”

The director had initially revealed several pieces of intense and inventive concept art from the project on that account back in January. The director “developed an entire” Alien movie while working with original Alien star Sigourney Weaver on the upcoming Chappie, and the artwork was a huge hit on the internet, with fans desperate for the director to actually proceed with the idea.

But then in February, Blomkamp revealed in an interview with Uproxx that while Fox was interested, he wasn’t entirely sure that he was committed to the idea, citing his frustration with Hollywood as the reason for his hesitance. The concept art featured designs for the iconic spacecraft which was also included in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, a badass-looking Ripley, an infected Hicks, the Weyland Corp. and Sigourney Weaver rocking some crazy Xenomorph headgear.

Variety confirms Blomkamp’s deal with 20th Century Fox on the new Alien project, which they report will be separate from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel.

The art for Blomkamp’s concept  is beautiful, dark and twisted, and it seems like the director has a very clear idea about the story he wants to tell. Regardless of his shortcomings with Elysium, Blomkamp still made one of the best sci-fi films of the last 25 years with District 9 — and there’s one thing about his work that’s undeniable: the designs are unique and extraordinary.
