Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Is Getting a Slight Rewrite in Response to ‘The Force Awakens’ Reactions

Rewrites are common in filmmaking, especially for big blockbuster films, where there are so many moving parts that filmmakers sometimes need to recalibrate to keep things focused — which makes this rumor about Star Wars: Episode VIII hardly surprising. Rumor has it that Rian Johnson’s screenplay may be undergoing a few minor rewrites as a response to the reactions to The Force Awakens, and while that sentence may trigger an eyebrow raise, you should know that this is totally a good thing — if true.

During the latest episode of Meet the Movie Press, The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider reports that Johnson may be rewriting a bit of the Episode VIII screenplay in order to minimize the roles of two new female characters. We’ve been hearing for a while that there’s not one, but two new key female roles to be filled, with names like Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tatiana Maslany, Bel Powley and more rumored to be on Lucasfilm’s shortlist.

But after fans were so taken by Rey, Finn and Poe, Lucasfilm and Johnson have decided to keep the focus more on developing these characters instead of throwing even more new faces into the mix. That’s totally fair, since there’s still so much we have yet to learn about Rey’s past and her ongoing journey, and we’d hate to see her story suffer due to overcrowding.

Since we know so very little about Episode VIII, it’s unclear just how important these two new roles would have been. That’s a question that likely won’t be answered until Johnson does press for the film leading up to its release in 2017.

All the same, giving more time to Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn and Oscar Isaac’s Poe is a great idea, and one with which we simply can’t argue.

Episode VIII hits theaters on May 26, 2017.
