This past weekend’s ‘SNL’ installment with ‘The Voice’ coach Blake Shelton pulling double duty proved every bit as exciting as it sounded (read: not), but what better way to restore the 40th anniversary season’s tempo than with ‘Whiplash’ master J.K. Simmons himself? Watch Simmons and Kenan brave the cold and bitter loneliness in this weekend’s ‘SNL’ promos!

Beginning this weekend’s ‘SNL’ preview outside to take advantage of the sadly-overestimated New York City snow, J.K. Simmons and Kenan Thompson quickly move indoors for the inevitable ‘Whiplash’ parody. And while musical guest D’Angelo is nowhere in sight, we also learn the terrible truth of the real names behind Simmons’ two front-loaded initials.

Interestingly, while this coming Saturday marks the ‘Legend of Korra’ and ‘Spider-Man’ star’s first time hosting, Simmons actually appeared on ‘SNL’ in 1999 as his HBO ‘Oz’ character Vernon Schillinger, guesting in a pre-taped segment that saw Jerry Seinfeld sent to the titular prison after the ‘Seinfeld’ series finale.

And hey, maybe we’ll finally learn something about that three-hour 40th anniversary special due on February 15! In the meantime, check out J.K. Simmons’ first ‘SNL’ promos above, and tell us in the comments what you want to see from this Saturday’s latest installment, acocmpanied by musical guest D’Angelo!
