The absence of Star Trek on TV has created a mystery around CBS’ All-Access Star Trek: Discovery, one we’re likely to wait for official announcements in October. Still, a new report suggests the main character will go by a familiar name, while Bryan Fuller will split the work with new showrunners, and avoid certain Trek mainstays.

Take this with a grain of salt for the moment, but Ain’t It Cool News uncovered a few new details of the upcoming series, which was previously stated to follow a female non-Captain character as its lead. According to AICN, Discovery will refer to said character Riker-style as “Number One,” albeit “in honor of Majel Barrett’s character in the original [Star Trek] pilot.” Fuller cleared the idea with CBS as an overall plan for the season, which at some point will finally reveal the main character’s real name.

Fuller also seemingly specified that he and Alex Kurtzman wrote the first hour of the new series, with the second scripted by Wrath of Khan writer Nicholas Meyer Additionally, Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies alum Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts will serve as co-showrunners, given Fuller’s … well, full plate.

Oh, and don’t expect any time-travel, as most every prior Trek season has incorporated at some point. “We haven’t broken [episode 11] thoroughly,” teased Fuller. “You never know when you want to pull out that device but I am not anticipating an over-reliance on time travel to tell this season’s stories.”

Shooting in Toronto this fall, the new 13-episode Star Trek: Discovery is officially said to take place 10 years before Kirk’s original Enterprise mission, as well to be “heavily serialized,” akin to a novel, more-so than an episodic nature. The new series will also feature a non-captain female lead, and explore the fallout of an event referenced, but never seen in the original series.

Bryan Fuller will headline the new streaming iteration of Star Trek as co-creator and executive producer, while Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer has also joined alongside Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod, fan-favorite Voyager novel alum Kirsten Beyer, franchise vet Joe Menosky and Heroes writer Aron Coleite. So reads the initial synopsis for the series, which debuts on CBS in January 2017 before moving to All-Access:

The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Additional details will emerge within the next few months, including an updated ship design, but what else should we expect from the new streaming Star Trek: Discovery?
