A few months ago, Disney announced the release of various comics and novels for fans of all ages called Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will explain everything that happened between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. All of these books, even the ones for little kids, are considered official canon. If you can’t wait until September, we’ve got the details from one of the prequel comics, which should shed a little light on what happened in the gap between movies.

There are 20 books (novels, YA books, comics and children’s stories) hitting shelves between September and December. One of those comics is titled Star Wars: Shattered Empire, and PREVIEWSworld has an official description from Marvel. It’s pretty lengthy, but here’s the important part:

Emperor Palpatine’s twenty-year reign of terror came to an abrupt and fiery end in the skies above the forest moon of Endor. A decisive victory for the Rebel Alliance, to be sure, but even with the loss of its leadership, the Empire’s Moffs and regional governors retained their hold on important systems from the Core to the Outer Rim, thanks to the might of the Imperial Starfleet. Now, with a power vacuum atop the Empire, those Moffs will jockey for position and control, and the heroes of the Rebel Alliance will soon discover that a wounded and fractious Empire may be more dangerous than any threat they faced before!

The first issue of the Star Wars: Shattered Empire series will hit stands on September 2, followed by a trade paperback collecting all four issues on November 17. Here’s the variant cover for the first issue:

With Lucasfilm and Disney hitting Comic-Con next week, we’ll probably hear a bit more about the series, as well as new information and footage about The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18.
