Star Wars fans are a dedicated bunch who express their fandom in a variety of ways. Some collect memorabilia. Others design intricate cosplay to show off an conventions. And then there are the two admirable fans who attached a model X-Wing to high-altitude balloons and filmed the iconic spacecraft with a GoPro camera as it literally hovered on the edge of Earth’s atmosphere.

However, the two guys who did this have ulterior motives beyond “this would look really cool and probably go viral.” As they make clear in the stunning footage above, this video is all about attracting the attention of director J.J. Abrams, who they assume will enjoy the ultimate practical effect. There is no CGI to be found here, so this is literally the closest we’ve ever been to a real X-Wing actually flying in outer space. For their trouble, the masterminds behind this video are requesting tickets to the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And you know what? Maybe they should get those tickets. A lot of fans attempt crazy stunts to attract the attention of their heroes, but only these guys have actually sent a fake spaceship 36,190 meters into the air because they love a science fiction movie series so much.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18.
