After seven years of waiting, no one knew if a sequel to '300' would do the business of its predecessor. And now we have a definitive answer: yes. '300: Rise of an Empire' effortlessly took the number one spot at the box office, proving that America still loves shirtless Greeks murdering each other in slow motion.

'300: Rise of an Empire' Review

Before anything else: the sex.
There is a sex scene in '300: Rise of an Empire' that is an all-timer. Put it right up there on the shelf next to 'Don't Look Now,' 'A History of Violence,' 'Blue is the Warmest Color,' '9 ½ Weeks' and any of the others that make those best-of lists. Actually, put next to that insanity in the pool from 'Showgirls' (you know, with the dolphin statue?), because there's a level of playful absurdity that changes it from a representation of love (or, more accurately, lust) to something of a Broadway choreographer's interpretation of a fight. Like a 'West Side Story' rumble, but with Eva Green moaning and bent over a table with maps and war figurines. A rise of an empire, indeed.

As we approach the theatrical release of '300: Rise of an Empire' and the first reviews slowly trickle out -- with our own Mike Sampson briefly summarizing it as "equal parts legitimately good, legitimately bad and so-bad-it's-good" -- Warner Bros. unleashed a massive new look at Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton duking it out on the high seas.

Though there've been countless trailers and images for '300: Rise of an Empire' -- heck, we went to Comic-Con and even the set itself to learn more about this film -- you may still be wondering what it is all about. Is it a sequel? A prequel? A spinoff? Let's put these questions to rest as the cast and crew behind 'Rise' walks us through the story in a new behind-the-scenes featurette.

'300: Rise of an Empire' isn't exactly a sequel. It is, in fact, the events happening at the same time as the battle of the Hot Gates from the first film. Thermisticles (Sullivan Stapleton), who was a real life politician and warrior, has a pretty brilliant idea. (Seriously, check out his Wikipedia page here.) It's an idea that may save the Greeks. Okay, fine. It did save the Greeks, considering the fact that we live in a democratic society.
Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) is back and we're actually learning quite a bit about his past. Though we didn't get to chat with Santoro on set, we talked to director Noam Murro about working with this much CGI, Sullivan about his role and Eva Green about her real-life female warrior. Check out what they had to say below.

For a film franchise that prides itself on such a unique and innovative style, the last couple of posters for '300: Rise of an Empire' have been uninspiring at best. Thankfully, the popular Austin-based poster boutique Mondo has come to the rescue, revealing a one-sheet worthy of such a weird, violent and stylized film universe. But how can you get your hands on one? Well, you're going to have to attend a special '300' fan event.

If you think the past few weeks have seen an absurd number of '300: Rise of an Empire' promotional materials, you'd be thinking right. Now, there's another new trailer. After years of development and a lengthy, delay-filled post-production, the sequel to Zack Snyder's '300' is finally seeing the light of day in a few weeks, and Warner Bros. is doing everything in their power to make sure that you and your mother and your next door neighbor are aware that it is a thing that exists and can be seen in theaters. But are any of these clips and posters and TV spots actually doing anything to get people excited?

After multiple major delays, the long-awaited sequel to '300' is finally nearing release, and now Warner Bros. has revealed the new '300: Rise of an Empire' trailer. After all, we wouldn't blame anyone for thinking that this movie vanished into the ether or simply never existed in the first place. But is the wait worth it? What got accomplished during all of those delays? Will 'Rise of an Empire' live up to the still-popular first film? Ask your own rhetorical questions as you hit play.

'300: Rise of an Empire' was among the many offerings from Legendary Pictures' Comic-Con 2013 panel presentations on Saturday, Jul. 20 in Hall H. Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel 'Xerxes,' the prequel to '300' was originally slated to hit theaters this August but was later moved to March 7, 2014, naturally increasing its level of mystery.
