Trying to keep up with whatever the heck the Oscars are doing every year is a full time job for many entertainment journalists, mainly because of the organization's labyrinthine rules and often bizarre nomination process. In the case of some categories, all of the potential nominees are whittled down to a shorter list of potential nominees and then, from that list, the final nominations are decided. This is the case with the Best Make-Up Academy Award and the list of seven finalists has been revealed.

Cloud Atlas,’ the Tom Tykwer and Wachowskis-directed movie adaptation of the David Mitchell novel, hits theaters today after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival a few weeks ago. But before you go on ahead to the theaters, how about a look at a brand-new mural and a listen to one of the pieces from the official movie soundtrack?

'Cloud Atlas' Review

EDIT

Trying to review 'Cloud Atlas' an hour after you've seen it is like trying to recite the Bible from memory after you've read it for the first time. I'll definitely be able to cover the big points, but the fine details are going to get lost: there's no way to take it all in on just one viewing.
Whatever its missteps, directors Tom Tykwer, and Andy and Lana Wachowski have crafted a staggeringly ambitious piece of cinema -- or really six pieces of cinema, strung together and interwoven and speaking to one another in all kinds of ways. Sitting here a short while after I saw it for the first time, I can't really say I fully understand a lot of the "why" -- why this character is so important to the fate of humanity, or why that character needs to activate that particular device -- but the "what" is always so compelling, I was happy to be puzzled. I still am.

'Cloud Atlas' Featurette: The Actors Loved Making It

EDIT
by Damon Houx October 23, 2012 @ 12:13 AM
'Cloud Atlas' opens Friday, and it's the sort of picture that will have people raving about it, one way or the other. Our own Matt Singer gave it an 8 out of 10, where others are calling it one of the best films of the year. The actors involved seemed to love making it, or at least that's the impression they give in this new featurette.

'Cloud Atlas' Featurette: Behind the Scenes of the Year's Most Ambitious Film

A typical trailer cannot even begin to describe the joys of 'Cloud Atlas.' One of the year's best and most ambitious films, it's the perfect antidote to what's been a pretty disappointing year for mainstream cinema, proof that yes, film is an art form that hasn't hit a ceiling. We've only just begun to realize what we can do with this medium (read our own Matt Singer's very positive review here). By its very nature, its hard to have simple conversations about 'Cloud Atlas,' which makes the below behind the scenes featurette feel significantly smarter than your average promotional video.
