Liberace Movie Deemed "Too Gay" for Hollywood...But Not for HBO

Remember when the first trailer for James Franco's 'Interior. Leather Bar.' hit? The film itself, which recreates the 40 minutes of footage excised from William Friedkin's gay S&M-focused thriller 'Cruising,' is in itself too provocative for the mainstreamers considering it's homosexual content. Even Franco stated sarcastically in the trailer, "Don't show gay sex... that's the f---ing devil!" Well, apparently another film has fallen into this category of being "too gay" for a big-screen wide release, and that's the Matt Damon- and Michael Douglas-starring Liberace biopic 'Behind the Candelabra.'

“I'm not a bad guy.” Matt Damon's character Steve Butler says this enough times in Gus Van Sant's new film 'Promised Land' that he probably believes it. He also says it enough for us in the audience to know that, whether knowingly or not, he's clearly the bad guy.
He is a representative of a natural gas company, one about to get a big promotion, because he seems to have the knack for getting cash-strapped rural landowners to sign over drilling rights. He claims it is because he's from a small town himself and understands what economic hardships can do to a person. We'll soon learn that it also due to his remarkable ability to see only what he wants to see.

We're starting to get a good look at this year's Oscar race, and one of the newest contenders is 'Promised Land' which was directed by Gus Van Sant, and stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski. Damon and Krasinski also wrote it (from a story by Dave Eggers), so yeah, this is definitely a contender.

Kenneth Lonergan's 'Margaret' hit DVD and VOD this week -- a film that languished in post-production limbo for six years as Lonergan was unable or unwilling to finish a cut with which he was satisfied. The film is a beautiful, oft-messy character study of a young woman and the effects of tragedy.

Superhero movies like ‘The Avengers’ aren’t the only genres permitted to mash characters together for the benefit of a heart-pumping action story. Spy thrillers apparently are able to venture down that path, as well. And so if audiences embrace Jeremy Renner as the lead agent in this summer’s ‘The Bourne Legacy,’ the creative team already has gone on record to say they'd like to see him team with a special guest star in the follow-up: Matt Damon.
