You can't imagine two films more different than 'The Croods' and 'Olympus Has Fallen,' but right now the two of them sit on top of the box office chart, both temporarily linked by the fact that a bunch of people apparently wanted to see them this weekend. It's the first time in forever that two films have opened to over $30 million at the same time...but it wasn't golden for all of the new releases.
In the weeks and months after 9/11, it was reported that the United States military was recruiting Hollywood screenwriters to help predict potential follow-up attacks. The new thriller 'Olympus Has Fallen' plays like the craziest, silliest entry from that post-9/11 doomsday scenario slush file -- a passionately loony blend of 'Die Hard' cliches and feverish right wing paranoia. If only the execution of this White House home invasion fantasy was half as entertaining as its conception.
'Olympus Has Fallen' is in the bizarre position of being the first of two "terrorists take over the White House" movies coming out in 2013. We'll have to wait until 'White House Down' arrives in June before we can make any immediate comparisons, but right now, we feel like the one starring Channing Tatum will be better worth our time than the one starring Gerard Butler. Can a new featurette change our minds?
